I'm convinced Infection severity is affected by wound severity. deep wounds and presumably gunshot wonds, and lacerations are going to affect you a lot more when infected. Alternately, multiple smaller infections does the trick as well. Infection deaths take a while and the infection really has to set in and become a problem.

The zombie infection is different and doesn't require a wound to become infected. It uses the same moodlet so it's hard to tell if it is that or a wound infection if you get both. #1.
