It had no prefix, and I can't give you a serial numbber range, but most are seen with 3 digit serial number if they are first year. The 39a is very similar in it's first year, as both had casehardened receivers, but the 39a had a round barrel, vs. the octagon barrel of the 39.

Using my blue book and the brophy book of Marlin firearms, there wasn't yet a Marlin offering in 1887 in 22LR. Their first 22LR lever was in 1891, the model 1891. The models 1891, 1892, 1897 and the 39 are the older 22s that marlin made.On the barrel, it say Marlin, Model 39A, NORTH HAVEN, CT (not the usual New Haven). The serial number on the tang, under the lever is 2164, no letter prefix or suffix. The stock is checkered and it is a crescent stock. Nov 15, 2008 · Model 39 Marlins with HS prefixes will date from 1932-37. Also 1938, but 1938 guns will have HS prefix and 39a style mag tubes. The late 39 also had the serrated buttplate, not the Marlin marked buttplate. Early HS prefix model 39 Marlins will have the bullseye, while later guns will not.

But, a Marlin Model 39 with a serial number in the range given would most likely been made in either the first year (1921) or early in the second year (1922) that the Model 39 was produced. Your Marlin Model 39 M (Mountie) was manufactured in 1980. According to a chart I have on production figures of the Models 39 A, 39 M, 39 C and 39 D ( well, all the 39 series from 1952) there were only 6 39 M's made in 1980. Jul 8, 2011 · Boot1978; The Micro-Groove barrels did not show up until 1954 in the Model 39-A's. The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. The Ballard barrels have 6 lands and grooves.
