I had an 89 150 xr4 for about 12 years and had only to replace a head gasket that I can remember. Ran good and started good. The only difference between it and the reg 150, was the lower unit on the xr4 was smaller and slimmer and cut the water better, though not as rugged. Like all large motors they loved gas.

I would not "de-rig" the 1987 off the boat as the 77 uses a different wiring harness and trim system. My best guess is the high speed charge coil in the stator. It looks like it's getting fuel, but not firing above a certain RPM. A stuck float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't be noticed at high speed. They basically stand open at WOT anyway.

So I found my poppet valve location and noticed that the smaller hole on the left is plugged and has no housing over it but the larger hole to the right has the housing over it, which is the poppet location.
