Having used pfsense/opnsense and openwrt for a decade now, I would say openwrt on x86 would be the better choice for most people. Easier to install (mount your boot drive externally, rufus the x86 image to it, put it in the pc), easier to configure antibufferbloat fixes (use luci_app_sqm, configure with layer_cake and put in your down and up speeds), way easier firewall setup.

I’d go OPNsense. There’s been a number of horror stories lately about pfSense 2.5 and their Wireguard implementation. Many of pfBlockerNG’s capabilities are available natively in OPNsense via their alias feature. Though, admittedly, dns block lists are pretty meh in OPNsense. They work, and that’s about it.
