Semi-central location, or near important resources, or near-ish an obelisk. Enough space to have all crafting stations, map room, and still enough room to have "pretty for the sake of pretty".

I will post a screenshot of an island which will make an excellent location for a first base. I usually start a base on an island near the center along the river. It's a decent sized island between two long ones. Just north of it is a large pond with a huge (minable rock) on the east side of it.
