Hey folks, I have a m1a scout squad with a wood stock and plastic upper handguard with a cutout in it to accommodate a rail for mounting a scout scope. Here's my dilemma, I reside in sunny southern CA where it often gets into the triple digits during summer time.

Four years in the US Army with M14's. Saw guys break wood stocks (usually while trying to break them). Saw guys break butt plates (again, just going overboard on slamming the butt down on the pavement). Never saw/heard of anyone breaking a GI handguard.

Removing the clip from the handguard, from my experience, it's best to use the handguard clip tool. Removing the handguard from the rifle, can be done with a couple of small flat blade screw drivers. I cracked a wooden handguard trying to put the clip on. Bought another wooden handguard from Fulton and the clip tool. Here are a few suggestions:There is some controversy on how to best install the handguard to obtain max accuracy. It is common knowledge that the bottom surfaces and rear surface should be clear of the stock and recierver, About 6/16 of an inche or a bit more, should be enough in these areas. The question of how to fit the front of the HG into the front band is the issue.
To remove the M1A handguard, first, make sure the rifle is unloaded and clear. Then, use a punch tool to push out the retaining pin located at the front of the handguard, and slide the handguard forward to remove it from the rifle.
