Mercari item arrived damaged.

I ordered an item on Aliexpress from more than 3 months ago, and it did not arrived yet. During that time however I made sure that I request an extension of the purchase protection. Now as I am requesting more purchase protection time, the seller sent me an image that he cannot extend it anymore. And that the item was damaged during shipment. The item itself wasn’t damaged but the top of the item’s box was pretty smashed in and dented, which detracts considerably from the item’s overall value. I submitted a return with pictures of the packaging and the item, and was surprised at how quickly Mercari cancelled and refunded my purchase.
