Nov 10, 2020 · On April 29, 2007, First Lieutenant Travis Manion and his fellow Marines were ambushed while on patrol in Iraq. He willingly led counterattacks to draw fire away by entering the kill zone numerous times to retrieve wounded Marines. He was fatally wounded by a sniper. Manion’s heroic actions undoubtedly saved the lives of everyone on the patrol. This year commemorates the 20th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001, and the end of a decades-long war. As we did 20 years ago, we once again look to our military community to lead the way and solve our country's most pressing challenges, including operations on the ground here in the United States to support Afghan resettlement efforts.
